Virginia Colwell was born in Nebraska but spent her childhood in Puerto Rico and Virginia. She received her BFA in fine art at Virginia Commonwealth University before moving to Barcelona, Spain to complete a master’s degree at Metropolis Masters Program in Architecture and Urban Studies. Colwell completed a second master’s degree in Visual Art at the University of Ohio, where she also worked in the studio of American artist, Anne Hamilton. Colwell’s thesis examined the visual tropes of recent monument production and established the foundation for her current line of inquiry: an investigation of the past through her art. While living in Spain she also worked as an artist and was awarded a two-year artist’s residency at the multimedia art center, Hangar.

Colwell works in a range of media including drawings, video, sculpture, sound art, and multimedia installations. Her work has been exhibited internationally, in the United States, Spain, Mexico, and Germany. She has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarship for her studies in Spain, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, the University Fellowship at Ohio State University, and most recently a Jumex Foundation Grant. She currently lives and works in Mexico City.
