Gabriel Rivera | Venom
Gabriel Rivera is a New York based artist who has presented work at MoMA PS1, The New Museum, Center for Performance Research, Salomon Contemporary and Columbia University, amongst other venues. Rivera acted as curator for the performances pace FAÇADE/FASAD which he established in Brooklyn in 2008. His undergraduate studies were at Pratt Institute and he is currently pursuing his MFA degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The text Venom written during Rivera’s residency at Marso Gallery was instigated by an invitation by fellow artist in residency Sarah Shoenfeld to write a text in relation to her work. What had started out as an exhibition text for Shoenfeld evolved into an autonomous work of poetic prose. Grounded in movement and ambiguity, Venom postures itself declaratively as a manifesto for the unknown and the psychic transformations that are evoked by it.
